What is Tiki and why do I like it?
For me, it combines middle-20th century pop culture (something I like a lot), tribal art
(something I like a lot),
travel
(something I like a lot), and rum (something I like a lot).
For other people, it is about completely different things, and that's also what makes it cool.

The mysterious little corner of the web in which you now find yourself began life
as The Tiki Bar Review Pages waaaay back in 1995, and existed as such until early 2006.
Now, it has become sort of a "Tiki resume" for me, a way for you to explore the various ways in
which I have personally been involved in the thriving international community of Tikiphiles.

Tiki Bar Review Pages
Started off as the "Tiki FAQ" in 1994, became a web site in 1995, and was mothballed in 2006.
Arguably the largest, most widely read, and most influential Tiki web site during the late 1990s.
Read the story of the site here.
Visit the archive of the site here.
Tiki Central and Critiki have risen since 2002 and 2004 - respectively - to take the place of (and far, far exceed the scope of) the TBRP.
Since 2003, I have spent more time posting to Tiki Central (user name is tikibars) than the TBRP.   It is an excellent source for information.

Tiki Road Trip
This book was inspired by - and has basically replaced -  the TBRP web site.
Published by Santa Monica Press in 2003.
The second edition will be available beginning in late May of 2007.
Tiki Road Trip 2 also has a MySpace page!

Big Stone Head
This book explores Easter Island, it's history, it's people, it's mysteries, and the pop culture phenomenon that has spread world wide from the island.  To be published soon.
Interested publishers are invited to
email me.

More Writing
I have written on the subject of Tiki for Playboy, Tiki Magazine, Re-Vue, AAA World, Road Trip America, Forces of Good, American Heritage, and other esteemed publications.

Lectures and Readings:
Doing readings from Tiki Road Trip doesn't make much sense (it s a travel guidebook, not so much a narrative), but I will be giving a presentation called The Making of Tiki Road Trip - in Technicolor at Hukilau, on June 15, 2007.  The public debut of the book (signing) will follow the multimedia event.

I have also put together a lecture/slide presentation based on Big Stone Head.
The presentation had it's premeire at the
Tiki Torch Nights event in Atlanta, GA in April of 2005, and has been presented several times since.  It is a fun and educational look at Easter Island, its history, its people, and the pop culture phenomenon that has sprung up around its famous monolithic carvings. This entertaining and educational show can be presented anywhere from a school to the kick-off of a Tiki weekender.  Please email for details.

Fundraiser
Legendary Exotica composer Robert Drasnin was our guest of honor at
Hukilau 2005 (see below).
He plans to follow up his masterful 1959 Voodoo LP with a new recording (titled "Voodoo II") in 2007.
For music this good, forty-eight years is by no means too long to wait for a second installment!
In order to fund the very expensive recording process, Mr. Drasnin was assisted by myself and Hanford Lemoore (head kahuna at Tiki Central) with a fundraiser (now over - it was a success!).

Events
Exotica 2000 was a group art show and a big party held in the back room of Right On Futon in Chicago.
I participated.  The concept expanded and...
Exotica 2003 was a huge 4-day festival held in several locations around Chicago.
I was one of the organizers.
(I had nothing to do with Exotica 2005, although I attended).

Hukilau 2002 was created by Christie White and Tim Glazner in Atlanta.  I was unable to show up, but I did attend Hukilau 2003 in Fort Lauderdale as a guest (signing copies of
Tiki Road Trip).  For Hukilau 2004, Christie and Tim asked me to use my experience in concert production to help them organize and stage manage the live music parts of the show.  This went well enough that after Tim stepped down from Hukilau 2005, Christie asked me to put together the entire event with her.  It was a tremendous success, and I went on to work with Christie on early development and planning for Hukilau 2006.  I'll be coming full circle in 2007, debuting Tiki Road Trip 2 at Hukilau on June 15.

In 2004, Trader Vic's asked me to plan a monthly event at the Chicago Trader Vic's.
From July 2004 through June 2005, we reveled in Tabu Tiki Night.

Trader Vic's in Chicago sadly closed in December of 2005, just shy of their 49th anniversary.
However, the Trader Vic's in Atlanta turned 30 in 2006, and Christie White (of Hukilau fame) and I assembled the anniversary party as part of her Tiki Torch Nights series
!

More events:
I attended the Hot Rod Hula Hop in Columbus, Ohio in 2005, and plan to go again in 2007.
This event is organized by the good folks at the Fraternal Order of Moai.

Whew!
That's a lot of Tiki!
I DO HAVE A LIFE  - the rest of it is here.

. . &

I have maintained this web site since 1995.
I write and create photos because I enjoy it.
People tell me they enjoy reading this site, so I keep it going.
However...
This site has cost me a lot of hours, and a lot of money.
And, unlike my writing for magazines or books, there is no
publisher sending me checks for the work I do on this site.
So...

If you find my writing to be entertaining, valuable, insightful,
or if
you'd rather just attempt to bribe me to go away,
please consider a donation, in any amount.
(perhaps the same amount as a magazine subscription or a book).
