We had great fun at this tiki restaurant. The atmosphere, food, drinks, service - all made for a great night out on the town. This is not a tiki bar in the traditional sense - the food is predominantly Japanese, with occasional Polynesian touches, rather than being Polynesian with Pacific Rim influences, or a 1940’s-1950’s mainland interpretation of Polynesian food. No matter, knowing that going in, we enjoyed the whole thing immensely.
The restaurant occupies a good-size spot downtown, and some real money went into the decor. Pretty high TiPSY (Tiki Per Square Yard) factor here - there are a number of booths in bamboo-framed huts topped with tapered tikis, tikiesque masks, oriental fans, glass floats in nets, puffer fish, the whole bit. Lots of fun touches - a miniature wave machine, and a textured wave mural, complete with a surfer and sharks, behind the large, grass-thatched bar trimmed with tiki and palm tree lights. I can’t really rate the bar area down for televisions, even though it has two, because they are draped with fishnets and seem to show only surfing programs, with sound either on low or off, so it doesn’t compete with the pseudo-Polynesian background music.
Drinks include some standards, such as the Singapore Sling, Blue Hawaii, and the Saketini (the latter, a Martini made with the sake - in this case, Grey Goose vodka and Geikkikan). There is a Mai Tai variant flavored with Amaretto, and a couple of drinks served in tiki mugs, which you can purchase for an additional $3. One of these is Mike’s Cliffhanger, a house original we had a couple of - quite good, frothy, not too sweet, and went well with the food offerings. It was based on Cruzan banana rum, with cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and Kahlua playing a supporting role. The traditional tiki drink tried was the Singapore Sling, and that was also made well. Average drink prices were in the $6-$7 range.
